READ ABOUT IT
Image editing is an essential part of creating high-quality visuals for training modules.
There are two main types of images: vector and raster.
Vector graphics are scalable high-quality graphics made up of paths defined by mathematical equations. This allows them to be resized without losing quality. Raster graphics, on the other hand, are made up of pixels. Raster graphics are ideal for detailed and complex images, but they can lose quality when resized.
Adobe provides industry-standard tools for both vector and raster graphic editing. Photoshop offers photo manipulation tools, retouching, and creative effects for raster images. Illustrator allows users to create scalable vector graphics. Both tools are part of the Adobe Creative Cloud suite, which operates on a subscription model.
These products are essential for many professionals, especially when collaboration is required.
Affinity* is a strong competitor to Adobe, offering a one-time purchase option instead of a subscription model. Affinity Photo is used to edit raster images, while Designer will allow you to create and edit vector graphics.
Affinity works well for freelancers who are working on solo projects. However, it may not be the best option for collaborative work.
Additionally, there are free open-source software options for those on a tight budget or who don’t use image editing software often. GIMP works well for editing raster images, while Inkscape is a great option for vector editing. These tools are high-quality options, but their user interface can be difficult to learn.
You’ll undoubtedly work with images as an instructional designer, so it will be helpful to decide which class of image editing software makes the most sense for you.
*As of July 2024, Affinity has been bought by Canva, and its future as a one-time purchase model is uncertain.
